Lívia Járóka, Rapporteur of the EU strategy on Roma inclusion delivered a one minute speech on yesterday's plenary session, welcoming the conclusions of the European Council meeting last week. She confirmed that boosting employment and social inclusion remained a priority of the utmost importance and called on Member States to draw the social consequences of the crisis and to fight poverty and social exclusion. Járóka reminded that the stumbling of the world economy and the debt crisis strangling the European Union had accelerated the harmful tendencies, due to which fewer and fewer people were able to maintain a proper standard of living and for more and more European citizens even everyday subsistence represented an insoluble challenge.
According to Járóka, the upcoming extraordinary summit of the European Council aiming at the finalization of the next Multiannual Financial Framework will be a crucial factor in improving the hopeless situation of the poorest Europeans. "The Commission and the Parliament have introduced proposals to give priority to the integration of the most disadvantaged communities. I truly hope that the fourteen EPP Group governments will unanimously promote these amendmentsin the Council, thus enabling regional policy to help the most deprived and most marginalized 30 million Europeans" – Járóka Lívia concluded.
