The Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee of the European Parliament held an extraordinary meeting yesterday (Wednesday) on the situation of Roma people in Europe with the participation of Commissioners Reding, Malmström and Andor. Regarding the Commission's decision to launch infringement procedures against several countries in case of non-compliance with the EU's Directive on free movement, Lívia Járóka MEP welcomed the settlement of the issue and urged the stakeholders to focus on developing a Community response to remedy the terrible poverty from which the Roma are trying to escape when they migrate.

Lívia Járóka MEP presented the working document of her Report on the EU strategy on the social inclusion of the Roma today to the European Parliament. The document points out that the social exclusion of European Roma is not exclusively defined by discrimination, but also by the interaction of several historic and economic factors and that a strategy aiming to remedy this exclusion must define its target audience by economic attributes instead of ethnicity.

Lívia Járóka MEP welcomed the Hungarian Government's statement on launching a European Roma Strategy during the Hungarian Presidency and called for an action plan based on economic attributes instead of ethnicity.

The Employment and Social Affairs Committee (EMPL) of the European Parliament today adopted the Őry Report on the 2010 Employment Guidelines for the Member States by an overwhelming majority. "In order to overcome the economic crisis and increase employment levels in Europe, coherent and decisive action should be taken by the Member States", said Csaba Őry MEP. The Rapporteur, who is also the EPP Group Coordinator of the EMPL Committee, considers it a big success as there were 294 amendments tabled by other Members to his Report, which shows an enormous interest from all sides.
