With changing consumption patterns and volume the European Union inevitably faces a hard challenge of addressing the issues of sustainability, safety of supply and import dependence of energy industry. While there are significant efforts by the Community and Member States to improve the energy efficiency, to enhance the energy economy of sectoral policies, transportation among them, to mitigate the increasing dependence on specific energy sources and to provide a more balanced supply of domestic production and of imports from different regions, these efforts were not able to turn the alarming trends that shaped the goals and directions of the European energy policy.
